even the most ardent democrat would admit that president obama isn't the best debater. but according to beth myers . . . >> jennifer: and then president obama's top political advisor is just as glowing about mitt romney . . . they are so funny, my opponent he is abe lincoln and daniel webster all rolled into one. isn't that kind of weird hearing the campaign say such nice things about their opponents? believe me it's not going to last and it's all part of managing expectations before the debate. for more i'm joined by one of the country's foremost experts on the subject. samuel popkin who is a professor of political science at the university of san diego. he has worked on campaigns going back to the 1970s, and he is also the author of "the candidate." welcome back inside "the war room," profez or. >> it's a pleasure to be back with you governor. >> jennifer: all right. do you think this has been taken to a new level this year? >> i think it has been taken to a new level every year, and gets more mindless meaningless and irrelevant every year. >> jennifer: i love that. b

reporting president obama himself knows that he lost the debate. he's upset about it. here to talk about it tonight, obama 2012 pollster, cornell belcher. also, ralph reed. cornell, bored, aloof, some said even arrogant. those are some of the words used today and last night to describe president obama on that stage. what exactly was the strategy heading into this? was there a strategy? >> what you saw last night from the president was the president trying to lay out the facts to those few undecided voters that are still out there. here's our plan, here's how we want to move the country forward versus mitt romney and his plan about moving the country forward. the problem with the debate last night is that one candidate showed up talking about the facts of their plan and the other candidate showed up with a completely different plan, and was completely dishonest about the facts of his plan. that was a little problematic. >> but the president did not seem to take the fight to mitt romney. if you believe that mitt romney wasn't being honest, the presid

debate was wondering where was the obama that we knew at the debate last night. >> jennifer: it is kind of interesting, isn't it? you have actually written a lot about psyching yourself up before a debate. president obama -- he did get into denver just two hours before the debate. do you think that based on his performance, it was somehow a miscalculation to sort of rush it? >> yeah. absolutely. you know, all the way back to 1960 in the first kennedy/nixon debate, the day of the debate, nixon's people put him out. he was doing events, he had speeches he gave the day of the debate which is nuts in retrospect. but i think even something as simple as a travel day why not do that the day before. it just seems like you don't want to take any risk that will throw your candidate off. you want them rested. you want them ready to go and i really don't -- i would like to hear somebody explain why they decided to fly him in that afternoon. >> jennifer: obviously they had a strategy in the debate about him being less combative. that he was going to be more presidential. that had to have been why he

for instance, when obama is talking during the debate i'll interrupt him and say that's what she said? ha, ha, ha. gets them every time. last week, my campaign leaked a memo telling everyone to lower expectations for my performance in these debates. as we all know barack obama is an extremely gifted speaker. you might even say he's a master debater. that's what she said? you got zing. you got zing. >> i don't know, man. fallen is giving zadakas a run for his moment on this romney impression. >>> here's the latest. >> mr. president, china is demanding that the u.s. pay back its debt in full immediately. failure to do so will bring on financial apocalypse. you need to look into that camera and convince the people of china we are good to pay back that debt. >> why you got to play me like that, china? when you loan that money to my predecessors, did you really think you were going to get it back? >> china's not budging but we have just had the results back from your latest presidential physical and it tornadoes out you have telepathic powers. look into that camera and convince the chinese

mitt romney is the clear winner of last night's debate, even i'm co conceding the obama loss. we all agree on this. the real question on moving forward is weather romney's win will change the race. we've seen mondale outperform president raleigh in 1984 and with john kerry defeated bush. neither kerry or mondale translated that into an election night win, although steve kornacki likes to think about a potential mondale president history. as the dust settles, they're back on the trail today. obama is en route to a rally in wisconsin, but earlier today in denver supporters saw the obama we hoped to see last night. >> when i got onto the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. he said that he doesn't even know that there's such laws that encourage outsourcing, never heard of them. he said if it's true, he must need a new accountant. we know for sure it was not the real mitt romney, because he seems to be doing just fine with his current accountant. thank goodness somebody is finally getting tough on big bird. it's about time. >> that guy's a winner.
